N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) gels, which have various physically and/or chemically controlled network structures, were synthesized from the viewpoint of composition of main monomer and crosslinker, chemical structure of monomer, and polymerization method. The surface properties of these gels were qualified by the equilibrium adsorption of benzoic acid. The potential for the adsorbent of the gel was estimated by the partition coefficient of benzoic acid as well as the equilibrium adsorption. Polymerization with N-acryloylpiperidine (APP), the more hydrophobic monomer, resulted in the increase of both the adsorption amount and partition coefficient at a temperature above the phase transition temperature of the gel. On the contrary, polymerization with acrylamide, the less hydrophobic monomer, resulted in the decrease of both. The largest ratio of partition coefficients appeared when the NIPA gel was copolymerized with 10 mol% APP. The interpenetrating network and plasma-initiated polymerization provide the mechanical strength of gel without decreasing its adsorption capacity.
