摘要:
Signal, noise, and signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) are fundamental conceptsdiscussed in the analytical chemistry curriculum. These concepts directly address measurementprecision, and ultimately relate to crucial analytical figures of merit such as detection limit (1).Student laboratories have been reported which address S/N issues such as ensemble averaging (2) anddigital smoothing (2c, 3), but many of these involve either simulated or circuit generated signalsand noise (2c-e, 3, 4), which moves the student experience away from real analyticalinstrumentation. A relatively comprehensive experiment that encompasses numerous aspects of signal, noise, and signal-to-noise ratio has not been reported.
