摘要： Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a major taste enhancer that is used as a food additive. Vitamin C (Vit C) and Nigella sativa oil (NSO) are known for their potent antioxidant activities. Objective: This study investigates the adverse effect of MSG on the thyroid gland and cerebellum of adult male albino rats and the protection against MSG-mediated toxicity provided by Vit C and NSO. Design: Fifty rats were divided into five groups that were treated via oral gavage. Group I (control) rats received distilled water, Group II rats were treated with MSG (6 mg/gm body weight/day), Group III rats were treated with MSG and Vit C (100 mg/kg body weight /day), Group IV rats were treated with MSG and NSO (50 mg/kg body weight two times per week), and Group V rats were treated with MSG together with both Vit C and NSO with MSG. After 60 days of treatment, rats were euthanized and histological sections were prepared from the thyroid gland and the cerebellum for routine staining and immunohistochemical detection of glial fibrillar acidic protein (GFAP), Caspase-3 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), respectively. Cerebellar tissue was also evaluated to determine glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels;GSH was also measured in thyroid tissue. Serum levels of fT3, fT4 and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) were also evaluated. Results: Microscopic examination of cerebellar tissues revealed significant cerebellar injury and cellular apoptosis among the rats in Group II. The thyroid glands of Group II rats were notable for degenerating follicles, loss of colloid, sloughed follicular cells and congested blood vessels. The cerebellar and thyroid tissues from rats in treatment Groups III, IV and V revealed significantly less pathology. Cerebellar and thyroid tissues from Group II rats that were treated with MSG alone revealed intense GFAP and caspase-3 (cerebellar) and PCNA (thyroid) immunoreactivity. 摘要： Cadmium is a phytotoxic metal which threatens the global food safety owing to its higher retention rates and non-biodegradable nature. Optimal study of microbe-assisted bioremediation is a potential way to minimize the adversities of Cd on plants. Current study was aimed to isolate, identify and characterize Cd tolerant PGPBs from industrially contaminated soil and to evaluate the potential of plant-microbe synergy for the growth augmentation and Cd remediation. The Acinetobacter sp. SG-5, identified through 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, was able to tolerate 1000 mg/l of applied Cd stress and ability of in vitro indole-3-acetic acid production, phosphate solubilization, as well as 1-aminocyclopropane-1 -carboxylic acid deaminase activity. A Petri plate experiment was designed to investigate the impact of Acinetobacter sp. SG-5 on applied Cd toxicity (0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 mu M) in maize cultivars (3062-Cd tolerant, 31P41-Cd susceptible). Results revealed that non-inoculated maize plants were drastically affected with applied Cd treatments for growth, antioxidants and mineral ions acquisition predominantly in susceptible cultivar (31P41). PGPB inoculation positively influenced the maize growth by enhanced anti-oxidative potential coupled with optimum level of nutrients (K, Ca, Mg, Zn). Analysis of morphophysio-biochemical traits after PGPB application revealed that substantial Cd tolerance was acquired by susceptible cv. 31P41 than tolerant cv. 3062 under applied Cd regimes. Research outcomes may be important for understanding the growth responses of Cd susceptible and tolerant maize cultivars under Acinetobacter sp. SG-5 inoculation and likely to provide efficient approaches to reduce Cd retention in edible plant parts and/or Cd bioremediation.

摘要： Eosinophils are becoming the target of increasing research interest as recent studies suggest that their role in immune homoeostasis and the immune response to disease is far more complex than previously understood. Historically, the horse eosinophil has been used to study basic eosinophil biology because of the considerable volume of blood required to obtain enough viable cells for reliable, repeatable experiments. This resulted in a large but disseminated body of literature pertaining to the structure and function of the horse eosinophil. More recently, equine clinicians have produced case reports and clinical studies in an effort to define the role of the eosinophil in diseases of the horse. A thorough review of the equine eosinophil incorporating both bench research and clinical reports does not exist. The objective of this two-part review is to fill this need by integrating the basic science and clinical research into a comprehensive body of work on what is known specifically about the horse eosinophil, and its role in equine health and disease. Part I summarises the development and tissue distribution of eosinophils in the normal horse, and presents what is known about the cell structure, migration and biochemical mediators of the horse eosinophil. Part II reviews the role of the eosinophil in diseases of the horse, and concludes with a summary of knowledge gaps and open research questions to benefit both those who wish to use the equine eosinophil as a model for basic science research, and those whose primary interest lies with diseases of horse.

摘要： This study aimed to determine the prognostic factors associated with biochemical recurrence (BCR) after radical prostatectomy (RP) in patients with pathological T2 (pT2) prostate cancer (PCa) and negative resection margin (RM) status at a single institution. In this retrospective study, we examined 386 patients who were diagnosed with pT2 PCa with negative RM after RP. The length of the tumor was provided for each biopsy core and the overall percentage of PCa was calculated by a pathologist at our institution. We estimated the BCR-free survival (BRFS) in these patients. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using the Cox proportional hazard model to determine the risk factors of BCR. The median age of the participants was 68 years, and their initial prostate-specific antigen level was 6.55 ng/mL. The median follow-up period was 85.7 months. The 5-year BRFS rate of the participants was 89.0%. The 5-year BRFS rates were 89.8% in patients with a biopsy Gleason score of 6, 90.4% in those with 7, and 64.1% in those with >= 8 (P = 0.007). The BRFS rate was 93.3% in patients who had a biopsy positive core <= 20% and 82.0% in those who had >= 21% (P = 0.001). Based on the multivariate analysis, the proportion of biopsy positive core was significantly associated with BCR. The proportion of biopsy positive core may predict preoperative covariates in patients with pT2 PCa and negative RM status after RP.

摘要： Well-defined hydrophilic telechelic dibromo poly(triethylene glycol monomethyl ether acrylate)s were prepared by single-electron transfer living radical polymerization employing a hydrophobic difunctional initiator containing acetal and disulfide linkages. Although the resulting homopolymers have low hydrophobic contents (<8.5 wt % of the entire structure), they are able to self-assemble in water into nanoscale micellelike particles via chain folding. Acetal and disulfide linkages were demonstrated to be "keystone" units for their dual stimuli-responsive behavior under biochemically relevant conditions. Their site-selective middle-chain cleavage under both acidic pH and reductive conditions splits the homopolymer into two equal-sized fragments and results in the breakdown of the nanoassemblies. The drug loading/delivery potential of these nanoparticles was investigated using curcumine combining in vitro drug release, cytotoxicity, and cellular uptake studies with human cancer cell lines (HT-29 and HeLa). Importantly, this strategy may be extended to prepare innovative nanoplatforms based on hydrophilic homopolymers or random copolymers for intelligent drug delivery.

摘要： Distinguishing between components (stomatal conductivity, mesophyll conductivity, carbon dioxide fixation in chloroplasts, and respiration) of the complex biochemical mechanism of plant photosynthesis is a challenging problem. To solve it, we used both experimental data obtained in natural conditions (time series of recorded indicators) and a specially designed experiment: determination of carbon dioxide compensation points. A specialized processing method (balanced identification) and the corresponding information technology made it possible to consider a number of models, unbiasedly evaluate the significance of the hypotheses, and determine the errors of models describing the dataset. The evolutionary method of modifying models (from simple to complex, with modeling error as the selection criterion) made it possible to choose a model whose complexity corresponds to the used experimental data. The model thus constructed is applied to calculate the assimilation of CO2 by forest ecosystems and WUE (Water Use Efficiency).

摘要： An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary carbohydrate-to-lipid (CHO:L) ratios on growth, liver and muscle glycogen content, haematological indices, and liver and intestinal enzyme activity of juvenile grouper (Epinephelus coioides). Five isonitrogenous (496.0 g/kg protein) and isoenergetic (21.6 KJ/g gross energy) diets with varying CHO:L ratios of 0.65 (D1), 1.31 (D2), 2.33 (D3), 4.24 (D4) and 8.51 (D5), respectively, were fed to triplicate groups of 20 fish (average 10.02 +/- 0.1 g) for 8 weeks. Results showed that the weight gain rate, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of juvenile grouper increased first and then decreased with the increase in CHO:L ratio, reaching a maximum value in the D4 (CHO:L = 4.24) diet. The trend for the feed conversion ratio was opposite to the PER. Along with the diet CHO:L ratios, the apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of crude lipid and energy for the juvenile groupers decreased gradually, while the ADC of dry matter, liver and muscle glycogen level increased gradually. Total protein, triglycerides and cholesterol in serum were all maximized in the D4 diet and glucose in the D5 (CHO:L = 8.51) diet. Digestive enzyme activity in the intestine was significantly affected by dietary CHO:L ratio. Liver hexokinase, phosphofructokinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity increased significantly as CHO:L ratio increased. Liver lysozyme and acid phosphatase activity in the groupers fed the D3 (CHO:L = 2.33) diet was significantly higher than that of other diets. Liver fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activity reached a maximum value in the D4 diet and was significantly higher than that in the D1 diet. Taking the above results together, it can be concluded that an optimal dietary CHO:L ratio of 2.33 is suitable for grouper culture concerning growth performance and health.

摘要： Mucuna pruriens L., commonly known as velvetbean or cow-itch, is a self-pollinated tropical legume of the family Fabaceae, known for its medicinal properties. The active principle L-DOPA extracted from the plant is a potent drug used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Although, it is hypothesized that a single step reaction can produce L-DOPA, the presence of optional routes makes the pathway more intricate. For instance, the catecholamine biosynthetic pathway, which leads to L-DOPA production, could occur by hydroxylation of tyrosine to L-DOPA either by polyphenol oxidase (PPO) or tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). Furthermore, Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes can also cause hydroxylation of tyrosine, resulting in L-DOPA synthesis. Therefore, the present investigation was focused on validating the step, which catalyzes the synthesis of L-DOPA, at the biochemical and molecular levels. Enzyme inhibitor studies showed significant inhibition of PPO enzyme with corresponding decrease in L-DOPA synthesis while TH and CYP inhibition had no effect on L-DOPA synthesis. Activity staining of non-denaturing PAGE gel for PPO and TH showed activity only to PPO enzyme. Following in-gel assay and tryptic digestion of the excised stained gel portion, peptide recovery and LC-MS/MS analysis were performed. Degenerate primers based on peptide sequence resulted in an 800bp amplicon. The subsequent sub-cloning, RACE analysis and BLAST search resulted in the isolation of full-length PPO coding sequence of 1800 bp. Structure prediction and phylogenetic analysis of the obtained sequence revealed strong similarity to other plant PPO's like Glycine max, Vigna radiata and Vicia faba of the same family.

摘要： Background and purpose: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), low dose rate brachytherapy (LDR-BT) and high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) are ablative-intent radiotherapy options for prostate cancer (PCa). These vary considerably in dose delivery, which may impact post-treatment prostate-specific antigen (PSA) patterns and biochemical control. We compared PSA kinetics between SBRT, HDR-BT, and LDR-BT, and assessed their relationships to biochemical recurrence-free survival (BCRFS). Methods and materials: Retrospective PSA data were analyzed for 3502 men with low-risk (n = 2223;63.5%), favorable intermediate-risk (n = 869;24.8%), and unfavorable intermediate-risk (n = 410;11.7%) PCa treated with SBRT (n = 1716;49.0%), HDR-BT (n = 512;14.6%), or LDR-BT (n = 1274;36.4%) without upfront androgen deprivation therapy at 10 institutions from 1990 to 2017. We compared nadir PSA (nPSA), time to nPSA, achievement of nPSA <0.2 ng/mL and <0.5 ng/mL, rates of nPSA <0.4 ng/mL at 4 years, and BCRFS. Results: Median follow-up was 72 months. Median nPSA and nPSA <0.2 ng/mL were stratified by risk group (interaction p < 0.001). Median nPSA and time to nPSA were 0.2 ng/mL at 44 months after SBRT, 0.1-0.2 ng/mL at 37 months after HDR-BT, and 0.01-0.2 ng/mL at 51 months after LDR-BT (mean log nPSA p < 0.009 for LDR-BT vs. SBRT or HDR-BT for low/favorable intermediate-risk). There were no differences in nPSA 0.4 ng/mL at 4 years (p 0.51). BCRFS was similar for all three modalities (p > 0.27). Continued PSA decay beyond 4 years was predictive of durable biochemical control. Conclusion: LDR-BT led to lower nPSAs with longer continued decay compared to SBRT and HDR-BT, but no differences in BCRFS. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

摘要： A highly sensitive SPR-PCF based biochemical sensor has been proposed based on finite element method simulations. Two metal wires are assumed to fill into two air holes in the y direction and the liquid analyze with refractive index higher than background material is injected into the central air hole. The liquid analyze supports liquid-core mode which couples to SPP mode as the phase matching condition is satisfied. High sensitivity of fiber sensor is achieved by the direct interaction between transmitted light and liquid analyze. The fiber sensor possesses the sensitivities of - 8383.9 nm/RIU, - 8428.6 nm/RIU and -8776.8 nm/RIU by filling gold, silver and aluminium respectively into the air holes of the PCF as the refractive index of liquid analyze varies from 1.454 to 1.478. The influences of the structural parameters of the PCF on the resonance wavelength and confinement loss are also analyzed.
