摘要： Objective: To investigate associations between alcohol consumption patterns and diet quality, nutrient intakes and biochemical profile of women of childbearing age. Design: Nutrient intake data from 24 h diet recalls, alcohol consumption data and diet quality from the Dietary Habits Questionnaire, and biochemical analyses from the cross-sectional 2008/09 Adult Nutrition Survey in New Zealand. Setting: New Zealand households. Participants: New Zealand women aged 18-45 years (n1124). Results: All analyses were completed using Stata and survey weights were used to allow for the complex survey design to produce population estimates. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine the associations between drinking patterns and the variables of interest, with 'infrequent moderate/light' drinkers being the reference category. The findings indicate that alcohol-consuming women of childbearing age tend to replace food energy with alcohol energy (P= 0 center dot 022). 'More frequent heavy' and 'more frequent moderate/light' drinkers had higher intakes of total, mono- and polyunsaturated fats with the latter group also consuming higher levels of saturated fats (P< 0 center dot 05). Women who were 'infrequent moderate/light' drinkers had relatively better diet quality, nutrient intakes and adequate biochemical status in comparison to other drinkers and abstainers. 'Infrequent heavy' drinkers, who were predominantly younger in age, had lower serum vitamin B(12)levels (P= 0 center dot 01) with a higher proportion of women in this category having below-recommended levels of serum folate (P< 0 center dot 05). Conclusions: Alcohol consumption, especially heavy drinking patterns, may compromise nutritional status of women of childbearing age.

摘要： Biochemistry is about structure and function, but it is also about data and this is where computers come in. From my time as a graduate student and post doc, whenever I encountered data I thought, "I can work this up by hand, but I think a computer could do a better job." Since that time, I have been working at the interface of biochemistry and computers, by attracting talented students and collaborating with colleagues with complementary skills. This has resulted in several exciting projects: a simulation of 2D electrophoresis and tandem mass spectrometry, the human visualization project, and two different programs that enable biochemists to search protein structures for enzyme active sites: ProMOL () and Moltimate (). The human side of software development for education involved finding the right students and colleagues, communicating effectively across disciplines, building and managing effective teams and the importance of serendipity throughout the process.

摘要： Camel pox (CMLP), a contagious viral disease of camels, causes considerable economic loss in terms of milk, meat, wool, and leather production besides reduction of draught power. The effect of spontaneous CMLP infection on hemogram, oxidative/nitrosative imbalance, and trace mineral homeostasis has not been studied earlier in dromedary camels. In the current study, hemogram, serum biochemistry, oxidant/antioxidant imbalance, and zinc (Zn)-copper (Cu) homeostasis were evaluated in healthy and pox-infected camels. The CMLP was confirmed from pooled samples of vesicular fluid, oral mucosa, and skin samples by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the C18L gene of CMLP virus. Hemogram was performed manually in whole blood. The serum was analyzed for biochemistry. The oxidative/nitrosative imbalance was measured by determining the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitrite and nitrate (NOx), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity in serum. Simultaneously, copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations were measured in serum. A pronounced leucopenia (p = 0.019), lymphopenia (p = 0.005), and hypoproteinemia (p = 0.014) were noted in CMLP-infected camels compared to healthy animals. The significant elevation of the MDA (p = 0.005) and NOx (p = 0.044) concentrations in serum of CMLP-infected indicated marked oxidative stress during the disease. The zinc concentration (p = 0.014) in CMLP-infected camels was significantly lower than healthy camels. The study supports that oxidative/nitrosative imbalance and Cu-Zn homeostasis are compromised and related to the pathophysiology of CMLP infection. The finding will be helpful to veterinary clinicians to adopt effective therapeutic strategies using antioxidants and trace minerals during CMLP outbreak. The timely vaccination and bio-security will be the mainstay for prevention of the diseases.

摘要： The kinetoplastids are protozoa characterized by the presence of a distinctive organelle, called the kinetoplast, which contains a large amount of DNA (kinetoplast DNA (kDNA)) inside their single mitochondrion. Kinetoplastids of medical and veterinary importance include Trypanosoma spp. (the causative agents of human and animal African Trypanosomiasis and of Chagas disease) and Leishmania spp. (the causative agents of the various forms of leishmaniasis). These neglected diseases affect millions of people across the globe, but drug treatment is hampered by the challenges of toxicity and drug resistance, among others. Propolis (a natural product made by bees) and compounds isolated from it are now being investigated as novel treatments of kinetoplastid infections. The anti-kinetoplastid efficacy of propolis is probably a consequence of its reported activity against kinetoplastid parasites of bees. This article presents a review of the reported anti-kinetoplastid potential of propolis, highlighting its anti-kinetoplastid activity in vitro and in vivo regardless of geographical origin. The mode of action of propolis depends on the organism it is acting on and includes growth inhibition, immunomodulation, macrophage activation, perturbation of the cell membrane architecture, phospholipid disturbances, and mitochondrial targets. This gives ample scope for further investigations toward the rational development of sustainable anti-kinetoplastid drugs.

摘要： Lippia filifolia Mart. & Schauer belongs to the Verbenaceae family and it is endemic from the rupestrian fields of the Espinhaco mountain range, located in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is an aromatic species with medicinal potential due to the production of volatile compounds that constitute its essential oil. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of light quality using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) over the growth of L. filifolia grown in vitro after 45 days of culture, analyzing its volatile organic compounds (VOCs), biochemical, and biometric traits. This study had four treatments according to the wavelength of LED lamps: (i) white (control), (ii) blue, (iii) red, and (iv) a combination of red + blue (mix). The light quality influenced the growth, metabolism, and VOCs production of plantlets. The specimens showed higher height under red and white treatments and higher biomass accumulation, nodal segments, and shoot numbers under the mix treatment. Higher total carbohydrate content was also observed on the mix treatment, while the white LED provided higher chlorophylls and carotenoids contents. In addition, the lipid peroxidation was more pronounced in mix and white LEDs treatments, and it was also observed significant but not quite changes in VOCs profiles due to light quality. Eucalyptol was the compound found in a higher concentration among the VOCs of L. filifolia grown in vitro at all light quality treatments studied.

摘要： Asparagine-linked glycosylation 13 homolog (ALG13) encodes a nonredundant, highly conserved, X-linked uridine diphosphate (UDP)-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase required for the synthesis of lipid linked oligosaccharide precursor and proper N-linked glycosylation. De novo variants inALG13underlie a form of early infantile epileptic encephalopathy known as EIEE36, but given its essential role in glycosylation, it is also considered a congenital disorder of glycosylation (CDG), ALG13-CDG. Twenty-four previously reported ALG13-CDG cases had de novo variants, but surprisingly, unlike most forms of CDG, ALG13-CDG did not show the anticipated glycosylation defects, typically detected by altered transferrin glycosylation. Structural homology modeling of two recurrent de novo variants, p.A81T and p.N107S, suggests both are likely to impact the function of ALG13. Using a corresponding ALG13-deficient yeast strain, we show that expressing yeast ALG13 with either of the highly conserved hotspot variants rescues the observed growth defect, but not its glycosylation abnormality. We present molecular and clinical data on 29 previously unreported individuals with de novo variants inALG13. This more than doubles the number of known cases. A key finding is that a vast majority of the individuals presents with West syndrome, a feature shared with other CDG types. Among these, the initial epileptic spasms best responded to adrenocorticotropic hormone or prednisolone, while clobazam and felbamate showed promise for continued epilepsy treatment. A ketogenic diet seems to play an important role in the treatment of these individuals.

摘要： Although science education, including biochemistry and molecular biology education, starts before students commence university, for many students, undergraduate programs are their first real introduction to biochemistry and molecular biology. Students often report that biochemistry and molecular biology are relatively difficult topics hence the use of varied and well-thought-out approaches are critical to fully engage students. This session provided insights into undergraduate curriculum design.

摘要： In this study, some physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, mineral content, and phenolic profiles ofBerberis vulgarisandBerberis crataeginawild-grown in Bayburt are analyzed and compared. The level of total phenolic content inB. crataeginaDC. (73.48 mu g GAE/mg KM) was found higher thanB. vulgaris(71.54 mu g GAE/mg KM). According to three methods (beta-carotene, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity) the antioxidant activity of theB. crataeginais also higher. The change in color (L*,b*) is found statistically important (p < .05). There are no meaningful differences between the dry matter, C vitamin, pH value, and water activity (p > .05). It was observed that the fruit type has a great effect on brix and ash content (p < .05) and glucose, total sugar, and malic acid content. Chlorogenic acid is the dominant phenolic component for both types. It is followed by syringic, sinapic, and gallic acid inB. vulgarisand sinapic, syringic, and gallic acid inB. crataegina. Practical applications Wild fruits have been consumed for centuries in nutrition or pharmacology applications. They are known as rich resources of antioxidant and phenolic compounds. For that reason, wild fruits play an important role in the prevention and treatment of some diseases especially cardiovascular diseases and cancer. In this study, wild-grownB. vulgarisandB. crataeginawere analyzed in detail according to their bioactive properties and an assessment was made in terms of industrial and medical usability. 摘要： Objective(s): In hemodialysis patients, malnutrition and inflammation are prominent determinants of mortality. Reduced muscle mass is considered to be one of the most valid criteria in malnutrition diagnosis, and hand grip strength (HGS) is used as an efficient tool for evaluating muscle functioning. The aim of this study was to determine if HGS is associated with the nutritional status determined with malnutrition-inflammation score (MIS) and biochemical parameters in HD patients. Design and Methods: Patients who have been on hemodialysis treatment for at least 6 months were included in this cross-sectional study. HGS was measured by a hand dynamometer. MIS was used to evaluate malnutrition, and Modified Charlson Comorbidity Index was used to rank comorbidities. Results: A total of 132 hemodialysis patients, 73 (55.3%) males and 59 (44.7%) females, were included. The mean age of the patients was 56.90 +/- 13.73 years. The mean age was 60.66 +/- 13.42 years in the low-HGS group and 52.91 +/- 13.00 years in the high-HGS group. HGS significantly decreased as age increased (P = .001). In patients with diabetes mellitus, HGS was significantly lower (67.4% and 43%;P = .013). Male patients with high HGS had significantly higher body weight (74.75 kg and 66 kg;P = .012). But there was no sig-nificant relationship between HGS and weight for female patients. HGS decreased when Charlson Comorbidity Index score (5 in lowHGS group and 4 in high-HGS group) and MIS values increased (8 in low-HGS group and 6 in high-HGS group) (P = .001 and P < .001, respectively). Only MIS was observed to have a statistically significant impact on HGS in the regression model (P < .001).
