摘要： In their seminal experiment in 1944, Heider and Simmel revealed that humans have a pronounced tendency to impose narrative meaning even in the presence of simple animations of geometric shapes. Despite the shapes having no discernible features or emotions, participants attributed strong social context, meaningful interactions, and even emotions to them. This experiment, run on traditional 2D displays has since had a significant impact on fields ranging from psychology to narrative storytelling. Virtual Reality (VR), on the other hand, offers a significantly new viewing paradigm, a fundamentally different type of experience with the potential to enhance presence, engagement and immersion. In this work, we explore and analyze to what extent the findings of the original experiment by Heider and Simmel carry over into a VR setting. We replicate such experiment in both traditional 2D displays and with a head mounted display (HMD) in VR, and use both subjective (questionnaire-based) and objective (eye-tracking) metrics to record the observers' visual behavior. We perform a thorough analysis of this data, and propose novel metrics for assessing the observers' visual behavior. Our questionnaire-based results suggest that participants who viewed the animation through a VR headset developed stronger emotional connections with the geometric shapes than those who viewed it on a traditional 2D screen. Additionally, the analysis of our eye-tracking data indicates that participants who watched the animation in VR exhibited fewer shifts in gaze, suggesting greater engagement with the action. However, we did not find evidence of differences in how subjects perceived the roles of the shapes, with both groups interpreting the animation's plot at the same level of accuracy. Our findings may have important implications for future psychological research using VR, especially regarding our understanding of social cognition and emotions.

摘要： Starting from Picasso's quote ("Computers are useless. They can only give you answers"), we discuss the introduction of generative artificial intelligence (AI), including generative adversarial networks (GANs) and transformer-based architectures such as large language models (LLMs) in radiology, where their potential in reporting, image synthesis, and analysis is notable. However, the need for improvements, evaluations, and regulations prior to clinical use is also clear. Integration of LLMs into clinical workflow needs cautiousness, to avoid or at least mitigate risks associated with false diagnostic suggestions. We highlight challenges in synthetic image generation, inherent biases in AI models, and privacy concerns, stressing the importance of diverse training datasets and robust data privacy measures. We examine the regulatory landscape, including the 2023 Executive Order on AI in the United States and the 2024 AI Act in the European Union, which set standards for AI applications in healthcare. This manuscript contributes to the field by emphasizing the necessity of maintaining the human element in medical procedures while leveraging generative AI, advocating for a "machines-in-the-loop" approach.

摘要： In software development, encountering bugs is inevitable. However, opportunities to learn more about bug removal are limited. When students perform debugging tasks, they often use print statements because students do not know how to use a debugger or have never used one. In this study, among various debugging methods, we focused on debugging using breakpoints. We implemented a function in Scratch, a visual programming language, that allows for self-learning of correct breakpoint placement and systematic debugging procedures. 摘要： Productivity in Research (PQ) is a scholarship granted by CNPq (Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development). This scholarship aims to recognize a few selected faculty researchers for their scientific production, outstanding technology and innovation in their respective areas of knowledge. In the present study, we evaluated the scientific production of the 185 researchers in the Computer Science area granted with PQ scholarship in the last PQ selection notice. To evaluate the productivity of each professor, we considered papers published in scientific journals and conferences (complete works) in a five years period (from 2017 to 2021). We analyzed the productivity in terms of both quantity and quality. We also evaluated its distribution over the country, universities and research facilities, as well as, the co-authorship network produced. © 2024, CC BY.

摘要： Advancing biomagnetic measurement capabilities requires a nuanced understanding of sensor performance beyond traditional metrics. This study introduces Biomagnetism Evaluation via Simulated Testing (BEST), a novel methodology combining a current dipole model simulating cardiac biomagnetic fields with a convolutional neural network. Our investigation reveals that optimal sensor array performance is achieved when sensors are in close proximity to the magnetic source, with a shorter effective domain. Contrary to common assumptions, the bottom edge length of the sensor has a negligible impact on array performance. BEST provides a versatile framework for exploring the influence of diverse technical indicators on biomagnetic sensor performance, offering valuable insights for sensor development and selection.

摘要： While a lucrative and growing field, low levels of gender and racial diversity in Computer Science (CS) remain prevalent. Education and workforce support programs with the intention to promote underrepresented students’ persistence in CS exist, which teach CS skills, inform of career options, and grow students’ network in CS. Studies have demonstrated these programs’ effectiveness as it relates to changes in affective outcomes, such as participants’ confidence in CS skills and attitudes towards CS jobs. However, the longitudinal impact of CS support programs on participants' build-up of social capital in CS, and the resulting social capital’s influence on their persistence in the field, remain unexplored. Motivated by the literature that associates demographic identifiers with access to social capital, and students’ access to developmental relationships and career-related resources (social capital) in CS with their persistence, this study explores a CS support program’s impact on persistence through capital building. We focus on Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI), which provided graduating high school students with a 3-week-long introduction to CS. We use interviews with participants who are now 2-5 years out of the program to study CSSI’s impact on their social capital and long-term persistence in CS. Thematic analysis reveals three features of the program that influenced students’ build-up of social capital, and that the resulting persistence was realized through students’ progress towards internships in CS and goals for paying-it-forward in CS. These findings inform our recommendations that future CS support programs and educational settings consider mentorship centered on socioemotional support, opportunities for collaboration, and time for fun social activities. 摘要： The application of knowledge from quantum physics to computer science, which we call "quantum informatics", is driving the development of new technologies, such as quantum computing and quantum key distribution. Researchers in physics education have recognized the promise and significance of teaching quantum informatics in schools, and various teaching methods are being developed, researched and applied. Although quantum informatics is equally relevant to computer science education, little research has been done on how to teach it with a focus on computer science concepts and knowledge. 摘要： Machine learning studies need colossal power to process massive datasets and train neural networks to reach high accuracies, which have become gradually unsustainable. Limited by the von Neumann bottleneck, current computing architectures and methods fuel this high power consumption. Here, we present an analog computing method that harnesses chaotic nonlinear attractors to perform machine learning tasks with low power consumption. Inspired by neuromorphic computing, our model is a programmable, versatile, and generalized platform for machine learning tasks. Our mode provides exceptional performance in clustering by utilizing chaotic attractors' nonlinear mapping and sensitivity to initial conditions. When deployed as a simple analog device, it only requires milliwatt-scale power levels while being on par with current machine learning techniques. We demonstrate low errors and high accuracies with our model for regression and classification-based learning tasks.

摘要： Goals number 2, 11 and 12 of the 17 sustainable development goals, enacted by the United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, aim to end hunger as a priority, create sustainable cities and above all encourage responsible consumption and production. With increasing world population and higher demand for food, we need to find ways of producing cheap sources of protein and lipid that may in turn be used as animal or aquaculture feed. A multitrophic system involving mealworm larvae (MWL, Tenebrio molitor) and black soldier fly larvae (BSFL, Hermetia illucens) was developed to transform fruit and vegetable kitchen waste into usable biomass. MWL, fed mainly on kitchen waste, reached an average prepupal length of 2.4 cm, fresh weight of 0.12 g and dry matter protein and lipid contents of 44.2% and 16.5% respectively, with an average specific growth rate (SGR) of 2.2%/day and a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 7.9. Conversely, BSFL fed on a variety of feeds, including MWL frass, kitchen waste and oats, had an average prepupal length of 1.3 cm, fresh weight of 0.16 g and dry matter protein and lipid contents of 41.4% and 26.3% respectively, with an average SGR and FCR of 4.3%/day and 8.9 respectively. The BSFL fed MWL frass obtained some of highest SGR and lowest FCR values, with one group achieving 7.5%/day and 2.9 respectively. This investigation has demonstrated the feasibility of a multi-trophic production system using kitchen waste to feed MWL whose frass was in turn used to feed BSFL thereby producing protein- and lipid-rich biomass that can serve as animal or aquaculture feed.
