摘要： Improving the efficiency of type-reduction algorithms continues to attract research interest. Recently, there has been some new type-reduction approaches claiming that they are more efficient than the well-known algorithms such as the enhanced Karnik-Mendel (EKM) and the enhanced iterative algorithm with stopping condition (EIASC). In a previous paper, we found that the computational efficiency of an algorithm is closely related to the platform, and how it is implemented. In computer science, the dependence on languages is usually avoided by focusing on the complexity of algorithms (using big O notation). In this article, the main contribution is the proposal of two novel type-reduction algorithms. Also, for the first time, a comprehensive study on both existing and new type-reduction approaches is made based on both algorithm complexity and practical computational time under a variety of programming languages. Based on the results, suggestions are given for the preferred algorithms in different scenarios depending on implementation platform and application context.

摘要： In the context of work zone safety, worker presence and its impact on crash severity has been less explored. Moreover, there is a lack of research on contributing factors by time-of-day. To accomplish this, first a mixed logit model was used to determine statistically significant crash severity contributing factors and their effects. Significant factors in both models included work-zone-specific characteristics and crash-specific characteristics, where environmental characteristics were only significant in the daytime model. In addition, results from parameter transferability test provided evidence that daytime and nighttime crashes need to be modeled separately. Further, to explore the nonlinear relationship between crash severity levels and time-of-day, as well as compare the effects of variables to that of the logit model and assess prediction performance, a Support Vector Machines (SVM) model trained by Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm was utilized. Opening the SVM black-box, a variable impact analysis was also performed. In addition to the characteristics identified in the logit models, the SVM models also included the impacts of vehicle-level characteristics. The variable impact analysis illustrated that the termination area of the work zone is most critical for both daytime and nighttime crashes, as this location has the highest increase in severe injury likelihood. In summary, results of this study demonstrate that work zone crashes need to be modeled separately by time-of-day with a high level of confidence. Furthermore, results show that the CS-SVM models provide better prediction performance compared to the SVM and logit models.

摘要： Background: Research into capital punishment has focussed on the length of time it will take to abolish. It will take decades or centuries. A key moment in the movement to abolish the death penalty was the 1980s when the Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR was developed. This was also the decade that the last significant changes were made to the United Nations drug conventions. At the time, awareness of the issue of capital punishment for drug offences was increasing around the world as more people were getting executed. This article looks at how western countries and the United Nations responded to Malaysia which introduced the mandatory death penalty for drug offences in 1982. Methods: Over 30,000 pages of documents have been accessed through the National Archives of Australia in Canberra. These have been photographed, scanned and converted to OCR. The most relevant folders have then been analysed through NVivo 12 to look for relevant mentions of the research question: capital punishment and Malaysia. All probative data is then presented in the article. Results: The data from National Archives suggests that the UN, Australia, and other western countries were happy to continue supporting Malaysia's drug policy and to elect it to high positions at UN meetings despite their public proclamations that they were opposed to the death penalty. Conclusion: Applying a critical juncture approach, the article concludes that the 1980s was a critical juncture in the movement to abolish the death penalty but abolitionist countries allowed capital punishment to continue for drug offences. This may have set back the abolition movement by decades.

摘要： The last decade has seen a significant amount of progress in the struggle to abolish the death penalty for drug offences, a practice that is both illegal under international law and proven to be ineffective. Political, legal and policy developments at the international, regional and national level have led to a progressive shift away from capital punishment as a tool for drug control, resulting in a relatively sharp decrease in global executions. Yet a small number of countries, primarily in Asia, continue to aggressively pursue the policy, executing hundreds of disadvantaged individuals every year, often following trials that do not meet international standards of fairness. At the same time, populist rhetoric advocating for the death penalty for drugs is on the rise in the region, reinvigorating aggressive drug wars and threatening to undermine the framework of existing international legal obligations and unravel decades of progress.

摘要： Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines are notorious for gender imbalance favouring men. From these, Computer Science appears to among the worst. The imbalance comes despite the fact that, the proportion of women publishing impactful papers has increased over the last couple of decades. Here, we explore the potential gender differences in collaboration dynamics of leading academics in Computer Science and contrast it with other researchers in the same discipline. This work aims to demonstrate that productivity patterns differ between men and women;understanding such patterns is fundamental to improving the current situation by driving well-thought interventions. We start by looking at topological features of academics ego-networks and their variability over their career lifespan;we found that women have a higher rate of repeated collaborators, while men have slightly more new collaborators. Second, we show gender differences in the acquisition patterns and maintenance of collaborations over the researchers' careers. Third, we look at alters' gender composition and gender role in introducing new collaborations to researchers and found that women are more homophilic than men and that the gender of the person being introduced (alter) tends to match the gender of the ego (the researcher). Last, we show that women reach their highest productivity levels earlier in their careers than men, but the levels attained are not at the same magnitude as men. Our work highlights the importance of studying gender differences by productivity levels, the role of gender-mixed groups in academia and the relation to academic production within these groups. This work contributes to a better understanding of gender roles in Computer Science and points to ways that can help reduce possible gaps.

摘要： Contemporary studies that focus on intimate homicide assume that patterns of policing, prosecution and punishment were uniformly disadvantageous to women before feminist activists intervened in the 1970s. This article tests that assumption by drawing on the Prosecution Project's digitisation of Australian criminal trial records. Using this resource, we selected all prosecutions (n = 314) of men for murders of women and of women for murders of men in New South Wales, from Federation (1901) to 1955, the year the state abolished the death penalty. By coding victim-offender relationships and analysing them in relation to case outcomes, we found that men were far more likely than women to be convicted of murder, including seven men executed for intimate femicides. By contrast, women were more likely than men to be acquitted outright, rather than plead guilty to manslaughter of male intimates, a trend that feminist research has identified recently. This research provides new findings of use to critical appraisals of the charging and sentencing reforms that were meant to remedy 'the laws of the fraternity'.

摘要： This work presents a gated non-local deep residual learning framework for image deraining. It can avoid the over-deraining or under-deraining caused by the global residual learning in existing deraining networks, since the learned soft gate in our method adaptively adjusts the amount of global residual to be passed for generating the final derained result. To generate feature maps for global residual prediction, we develop a non-local guided attention module (NLAM), which first obtains non-local features by exploiting spatial inter-dependencies among all the feature positions of local features produced by convolutional neural network (CNN), and then leverages the attention mechanism to merge the local and non-local features based on their complementary relation. Moreover, we develop a channel-wise gated prediction module to learn a soft gate on the global residual by explicitly modelling channel inter-dependencies of the feature maps obtained from NLAM. Experiments on four deraining benchmark datasets and real-world rainy images show that our network has a quantitative and qualitative improvement over state-of-the-arts.

摘要： Different feedback mechanisms have been reported in consensus reaching models to provide advices for preference adjustment to assist decision makers to improve their consensus levels. However, most feedback mechanisms do not consider the willingness of decision makers to accept these advices. In the opinion dynamics discipline, the bounded confidence model justifies well that in the process of interaction a decision maker only considers the preferences that do not exceed a certain confidence level compared to his own preference. Inspired by this idea, this article proposes a new consensus reaching model with personalized feedback mechanism to help decision makers with bounded confidences in achieving consensus. Specifically, the personalized feedback mechanism produces more acceptable advices in the two cases where bounded confidences are known or unknown, and the unknown ones are estimated by a learning algorithm. Finally, numerical example and simulation analysis are presented to explore the effectiveness of the proposed model in reaching consensus.

摘要： This work is situated in research on Parental Involvement (PI) in Computer Science (CS) Education. While the importance of PI in children's education is well established, most parents have little experience in CS and struggle to facilitate the learning of a child in the area. If PI in CS Education is to happen, then we argue that parents need support and that understanding the current behaviours and attitudes toward CS in the family context is important to discerning the form that support should take. This article therefore describes the development of an instrument to identify factors relating to parental attitudes toward and motivation for PI in CS education. Relevant variables situated in the context of parental computing behaviours and attitudes in the home were identified using a literature review and expert focus group. These include computing usage, availability, confidence, and experience. To measure these variables, a survey instrument was developed and administered to a large sample of parents (n = 1228). Results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis confirm that the instrument measures five constructs, namely "Confidence," measuring parental confidence levels with computing;"Attitude to PI";"Motivation for PI";and two types of "Usage": Creation and Consumption. Results of Pearson correlation revealed significant positive relationships between confidence and both positive attitudes toward, and motivation for, PI, with linear regressions confirming that confidence was a significant predictor of both. Regression analysis also identified that creative usage was a predictor of positive attitudes to PI, and that programming experience was a predictor of attitude to, and motivation for, PI. These findings were further validated through triangulation with qualitative data from focus groups with the target population. 摘要： A common belief among students is that computing is a boring subject that lacks a connection to the real world. The first class (one 80-minute session) in an introductory computer science course may be an appropriate instance to combat such a belief. Previous studies have used coursewide interventions, e.g., games and physical/tangible devices to improve students' motivation. However, although other approaches help motivate students, they may lack real-world context or have a high cost of deployment. This article proposes a novel real-world based approach to introduce programming concepts in the first class of the introductory computer science course. This approach, called Protobject based, is applicable to courses with over 100 students, has a low deployment entry barrier, requires low investment, and may be used creatively to implement different experiences. Furthermore, the Protobject-based approach has an equivalent motivational effect-at least in the short-term-to a Game-based approach even if it is entirely focused on the real world. The low requirements of the approach make it especially suitable for an 80-minute first class in an introductory computer science course. The Protobject-based approach has been preliminarily validated and compared to a pure game-based approach with a study with 376 participants, and we present the analysis of motivation questionnaires, a pre-test and post-test, and a homework assignment given to the students. We posit that more research into initiatives such as this one-that can show students how computer science can impact the real world around them-is warranted.
