摘要： Our proposal for selective subjects especially those involving intensive problem-solving assignments and/or tutorials, such as Introduction to Algorithms and Data structures, Discrete Mathematics, Coding Theory, Number theory, Combinatorics and Graph Theory (CGT), Automata theory, is to supplement lectures with a moderated online forum against an intranet portal. By way of illustration we take the example of a restricted view of OEIS (http://***). The restriction can be w.r.t. sequences in OEIS that are directly relevant to say CGT. ***'s OEIS is a collection of over 2,39,147 integer sequences and their properties. In particular OEIS contains definitions of many combinatorial structures, dense range of interpretations, generating functions and conjectured ones, cross references within OEIS and to outside resources, references to texts and technical articles, codes in Maple, Mathematica etc. For organizing courses such as the above mentioned, a first task is to partially create an OEIS-like instructor-moderated portal in a university intranet. During the course of lectures and tutorials students are invited to contribute to the portal and these may be augmented/approved by instructors suitably, to find a place in the portal. By this many concepts can be conveyed to the students in an interesting way with the desired results. In the arguments presented, examples related to Combinatorics and Graph Theory are given. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

摘要： Understanding the relationship between the composition of a research team and the potential impact of their research papers is crucial as it can steer the development of new science policies for improving the research enterprise. Numerous studies assess how the characteristics and diversity of research teams can influence their performance across several dimensions: ethnicity, internationality, size, and others. In this paper, we explore the impact of diversity in terms of the authors’ expertise. To this purpose, we retrieved 114K papers in the field of Computer Science and analysed how the diversity of research fields within a research team relates to the number of citations their papers received in the upcoming 5 years. The results show that two different metrics we defined, reflecting the diversity of expertise, are significantly associated with the number of citations. This suggests that, at least in Computer Science, diversity of expertise is key to scientific impact. © 2023, CC BY.

摘要： Surgical skill requires the manipulation of soft viscoelastic media. Its measurement through generative models is essential both for accurate quantification of surgical ability and for eventual automation in robotic platforms. Here we describe a sensorised scalpel, along with a generative model to assess surgical skill in elliptical excision, a representative manipulation task. Our approach allows us to capture temporal features via data collection and downstream analysis. We demonstrate that incision forces carry information that is relevant for skill interpretation, but inaccessible via conventional descriptive statistics. We tested our approach on 12 medical students and two practicing surgeons using a tissue phantom mimicking the properties of human skin. We demonstrate that our approach can bring deeper insight into performance analysis than traditional time and motion studies, and help to explain subjective assessor skill ratings. Our technique could be useful in applications spanning forensics, pathology as well as surgical skill quantification.

摘要： Computational thinking is a vital component in educational system in order to produce future workers who are the best problem solvers. However, teachers’ level of pedagogical content knowledge of computational thinking is uncertain. Moreover, teaching materials for computational thinking are inadequate. The purpose of the study is to identify the need to develop a pedagogical module of computational thinking, from the view of teachers. This study is using a survey method. A total of 50 respondents from one of the states in Malaysia were involved in the study. They taught computer science foundation in secondary schools. The questionnaire is adapted from Pedagogical Content Knowledge model which consists of four constructs: decomposition techniques, pattern recognition techniques, abstraction techniques, and generalization techniques. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 25. The findings revealed that the means of all constructs were high. The findings also showed that majority of the teachers (94.0%) agreed to have a pedagogical module for computational thinking. Based on the t-test analysis, it was found that there was a significant difference (t = 2.765, df = 48, p <0.05) between the mean scores of teachers who had participated in computational thinking course and teachers who did not participate in computational thinking course. Hence, the findings suggest that teaching materials and courses that are related to computational thinking should be given to teachers.
