摘要： It is undeniable that citizen science contributes to the advancement of various fields of study. There are now software tools that facilitate the development of citizen science apps. However, apps developed with these tools rely on individual human skills to correctly collect useful data. Machine learning (ML)-aided apps provide on-field guidance to citizen scientists on data collection tasks. However, these apps rely on server-side ML support, and therefore need a reliable internet connection. Furthermore, the development of citizen science apps with ML support requires a significant investment of time and money. For some projects, this barrier may preclude the use of citizen science effectively. We present a platform that democratizes citizen science by making it accessible to a much broader audience of both researchers and participants. The SmartCS platform allows one to create citizen science apps with ML support quickly and without coding skills. Apps developed using SmartCS have client-side ML support, making them usable in the field, even when there is no internet connection. The client-side ML helps educate users to better recognize the subjects, thereby enabling high-quality data collection. 摘要： Haar Cascade is a cost-effective and user-friendly machine learning-based algorithm for detecting objects in images and videos. Unlike Deep Learning algorithms, which typically require significant resources and expensive computing costs, it uses simple image processing techniques like edge detection and Haar features that are easy to comprehend and implement. By combining Haar Cascade with OpenCV2 on an embedded computer like the NVIDIA Jetson Nano, this system can accurately detect and match faces in a database for attendance tracking. This system aims to achieve several specific objectives that set it apart from existing solutions. It leverages Haar Cascade, enriched with carefully selected Haar features, such as Haar-like wavelets, and employs advanced edge detection techniques. These techniques enable precise face detection and matching in both images and videos, contributing to high accuracy and robust performance. By doing so, it minimizes manual intervention and reduces errors, thereby strengthening accountability. Additionally, the integration of OpenCV2 and the NVIDIA Jetson Nano optimizes processing efficiency, making it suitable for resource-constrained environments. This system caters to a diverse range of educational institutions, including schools, colleges, vocational training centers, and various workplace settings such as small businesses, offices, and factories. Its adaptability to distinct organizational requirements ensures its relevance and effectiveness across a broad spectrum of users. One of the distinguishing features of this system is its robust integration with databases. It enables efficient storage of attendance records and supports customizable report generation. 摘要： Microfluidics and 3D printing offer exciting opportunities for the development of new technologies and applications in the fields of biology, chemistry, and medicine. However, the design of 3D-printed microfluidic devices remains a challenging and complex task, requiring specialized knowledge and expertise in fluid mechanics, 3D modeling, and 3D printing technology. Currently, there are very few tools helping engineers to do the labor-intensive process of designing microfluidic devices, let alone any tools that can help them design microfluidic devices for 3D printing. In this work, we introduce Flui3d, an interactive software platform for designing microfluidic devices for 3D printing. Flui3d offers a standard parameterized component library, support for multi-layer design, and the ability to design and configure microfluidic devices without the need for specialized knowledge. Flui3d incorporates a distinctive Design-for-Manufacturing (DFM) function, facilitating seamless fabrication of the designed microfluidic devices using commercial consumer-grade printers. We discuss the key features and benefits of Flui3d and demonstrate them by designing examples of microfluidic devices. We also discuss the design complexity and the potential applications of Flui3d.

摘要： The Covering Location Problem (CLP) is widely used for the efficient facility distribution. However, existing algorithms for this problem suffer from long computation times or suboptimal solutions. To address this, we propose two methods based on graph convolutional networks (GCN) to solve two types of covering location problems: the location set covering problem and the maximum covering location problem. The first method, GCN-Greedy, is a supervised algorithm that synergized with the Greedy algorithm as decoder. It designs a specialized loss function to train the model, tailored to the characteristics of the two covering location problems. The second method, reinforcement learning based on GCN with autoregressive decoder (GCN-AR-RL), represents a reinforcement learning framework that integrates a GCN encoder with an auto -regressive decoder. The experimental results of these models demonstrate the remarkable accuracy and performance advantages. Additionally, we apply these two models to the realistic dataset and achieve good performance.

摘要： Machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP) overcomes the challenges of high computational costs in density -functional theory and the relatively low accuracy in classical large-scale molecular dynamics, facilitating more efficient and precise simulations in materials research and design. In this review, the current state of the four essential stages of MLIP is discussed, including data generation methods, material structure descriptors, six unique machine learning algorithms, and available software. Furthermore, the applications of MLIP in various fields are investigated, notably in phase -change memory materials, structure searching, material properties predicting, and the pre -trained universal models. Eventually, the future perspectives, consisting of standard datasets, transferability, generalization, and trade-off between accuracy and complexity in MLIPs, are reported.

摘要： In the dawning era of artificial intelligence (AI), health care stands to undergo a significant transformation with the increasing digitalization of patient data. Digital imaging, in particular, will serve as an important platform for AI to aid decision making and diagnostics. A growing number of studies demonstrate the potential of automatic pre-surgical skin tumor delineation, which could have tremendous impact on clinical practice. However, current methods rely on having ground truth images in which tumor borders are already identified, which is not clinically possible. We report a novel approach where hyperspectral images provide spectra from small regions representing healthy tissue and tumor, which are used to generate prediction maps using artificial neural networks (ANNs), after which a segmentation algorithm automatically identifies the tumor borders. This circumvents the need for ground truth images, since an ANN model is trained with data from each individual patient, representing a more clinically relevant approach.

摘要： Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces have recently emerged as a revolutionary next-generation wireless networks paradigm that harnesses engineered electromagnetic environments to reshape radio wave propagation. Pioneering research presented in this article establishes the viability of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-enhanced indoor localisation and charts a roadmap for its integration into next-generation wireless network architectures. Here, we present a comprehensive experimental analysis of a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-enabled indoor localisation scheme that evaluates the localisation accuracy of different machine learning algorithms under varying Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces states, antenna types, and communication setups. The results indicate that incorporating Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces can significantly enhance indoor localisation accuracy, achieving an impressive 82.4% success rate. Moreover, this study delves into system performance across varied communication modes and subcarrier configurations. This research is poised to lay the groundwork for implementing Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-empowered joint sensing and communications in future next-generation wireless networks.

摘要： Quantum computing presents a transformative potential for the world of computing. However, integrating this technology into the curriculum for computer science students who lack prior exposure to quantum mechanics and advanced mathematics remains a challenging task. This paper proposes a scaffolded learning approach aimed at equipping computer science students with essential quantum principles. By introducing foundational quantum concepts through relatable analogies and a layered learning approach based on classical computation, this approach seeks to bridge the gap between classical and quantum computing. This differs from previous approaches which build quantum computing fundamentals from the prerequisite of linear algebra and mathematics. The paper offers a considered set of intuitive analogies for foundation quantum concepts including entanglement, superposition, quantum data structures and quantum algorithms. These analogies coupled with a computing-based layered learning approach, lay the groundwork for a comprehensive teaching methodology tailored for undergraduate third level computer science students. © 2024, CC BY.

摘要： Text-to-video generation task has witnessed a notable progress, with the generated outcomes reflecting the text prompts with high fidelity and impressive visual qualities. However, current text-to-video generation models are invariably focused on conveying the visual elements of a single scene, and have so far been indifferent to another important potential of the medium, namely a storytelling. In this paper, we examine text-to-video generation from a storytelling perspective, which has been hardly investigated, and make empirical remarks that spotlight the limitations of current text-to-video generation scheme. We also propose an evaluation framework for storytelling aspects of videos, and discuss the potential future directions. © 2024, CC BY.
