摘要:
The character of “参(can)” in “参目虎首(canmu hushou)” in Evocation of Chu Ci can not be explained as Constellation Orion or the number 3. It means “protruding” there. The local god image of Tubo with bulging eyes has been introduced to Korea since very ancient times. “The same amount of money is sacrificed to Land King, Local God and so on, … ” recorded in the carved inscription in a stone in the mausoleum of Wuning King and his queen of Baekje Kingdom located in Chungnam can prove it. In the period of Korea Kingdom, the Tubo was called “Sajik god” etc. Then in early days of the Li Dynasty, this traditional god was renamed as Land God Hou, Land Lord, the Great Local General, Patron God of the Cave [Dong], Patron God of this Mounting, and the like to avoid confusion with the new literary societies organized by literati and bureaucrats. This god with bulging eyes as the incarnation of Tubo has also continued to guard tombs and underworlds. Some stone statues, which originated in Tubo, scattered at Institute of Guanghui,Yonsei University, Medieval Stone Museum, Yongin, Gyeonggi Do and other places in Korea just are the proofs to confirm that the god image with bulding eyes in Evocation of Chu Ci has spread on the Korea peninsula.
