Gearóid Ó Crualaoich's The Book of the Cailleach (Cork University Press) has a dual purpose: to examine Irish traditions about the legendary supernatural Hag or Cailleach associated with certain landscape features, and to relate anecdotes told of certain real-life wise women and healers to aspects and attributes of the Cailleach.
Nicholas J. Saunders breaks new ground in his Trench Art (Berg), discussing a hitherto neglected form of material culture: the mementos and ornaments created from battlefield debris (such as shell cases), particularly those of the First World War, either by the soldiers themselves, by prisoners of war, or by civilians living close to battlefields.
The first is Mineke Schipper's Never Marry a Woman with Big Feet (Yale University Press), a substantial collection of proverbs from around the world that express views on the nature, role and status of women in the family and in society.
