摘要:
Objective(s): Evaluate the evidence of the effectiveness of training provided to caregivers on movement tasks typically completed by physical therapists (PT) (walking, transfers, wheelchair use). Data Sources: We searched PubMed, PEDro, CINAHL, Web of Science, Proquest Health and Medical, and Scopus databases, using combinations of the following search terms: caregiver, training, education, physical therapy, lifting, mobility, and ambulation. Study Selection: Criteria were chosen to capture all studies that included caregiver training related to functional mobility for adults with neurological disorders. Included were peer-reviewed studies in which caregivers received hands-on training for mobility tasks for adult patients. Studies with primary diagnoses of cancer, HIV, and dementia were excluded due to confounding factors. Data Extraction: For articles included in this review, the following information was extracted: type of study, methodological quality review (using the Pedro, and Downs and Black scales), level of evidence, number of subjects, outcome measures used, interventions, and primary positive and negative results. The results of the level of evidence, Downs and Black scale, and PEDro scale provided a comparison of the strength of evidence of the included studies. Data Synthesis: Seven articles met inclusion criteria. Four articles were randomized control trials, two used quasi-experimental methods, and one used a mixed method approach. Only one randomized study had positive results, yet all quasi-experimental studies and the mixed methods study reported positive results with caregiver outcomes. Conclusions: The results of this review provide preliminary evidence of the benefits of PT-led caregiver training. Further research is needed to identify specific, effective training techniques and to demonstrate the benefits of PT-led caregiver training on mobility tasks.
